TOM SACHS: Furniture

July 8 - September 4, 2022

Rebuild Foundation and Anthony Gallery are honored to announce Tom Sachs: Furniture, the fourth exhibition in Anthony Gallery’s year-long takeover of the Stony Island Arts Bank’s first floor gallery space. Through this collaboration, Rebuild Foundation and Anthony Gallery are celebrating the work of emerging and established contemporary artists while amplifying Chicago as a world-class destination for art and honoring the city's rich cultural landscape.

Tom Sachs: Furniture is an extension of Sachs’ sculpture practice, he has been designing and building furniture for 30 years. This is the artist’s first gallery exhibition of his furniture in the United States in over twenty years.

Sachs’ furniture is conspicuously handmade and shows evidence of each piece’s construction, removing it from the realm of miraculous conception that pervades industry. This transparency—the idea of showing marks—tells the story of the making. The more we can tell the story, the more we can invest in our things and build greater connections with the items and rituals in our daily lives. Sachs challenges us to reflect on the objects we buy; the furniture we have, our sound systems and the music they play, and reminds us everything is art - it’s about the rituals that activate it.

This long-held ethos of accessibility, ritual and making are not dissimilar to the history and mission of Theaster Gates' and Rebuild Foundation's Stony Island Arts Bank. Built nearly a century ago in 1923, the meticulously restored formerly abandoned bank serves as a creative space for the preservation, redeployment and amplification of art and cultural artifacts on the South Side of Chicago. The Stony Island Arts Bank, a site of historical importance for the neighborhood, has become a landmark cultural institution honoring Black experiences and creative exploration of art and cultural artifacts on the South Side of Chicago.
